Zoo York’s history began back in the late 1970’s as graffiti and skateboarding were vastly becoming a cultural phenomenon in New York City. A group of loose-knit skateboarders and graffiti artists called “Soul Artists of Zoo York” coined the term “Zoo York” by an underground subway tunnel that runs through the vicinity of Central Park Zoo where graffiti artists met at night.

NYC’s vindictive streets strongly influenced Zoo York’s colorful merge of global flavors. Ever since its birth, Zoo York’s product line continues to be highly influenced by graffiti, hip-hop and skateboarding which made it become a growing and worldwide recognized brand with a strong East coast attitude.
During the 1980s, the term “Zoo York” was recognized to distinctly stand for NYC’s underground division of graffiti artists and skateboarders. The Zoo York revolution came in full effect when subway trains were worked on by graffiti artists, wheels of steel were mastered by DJs, and skateboarders claimed Washington Square, the Astor and Brooklyn Banks which are now globally recognized legendary spots.

It was in 1993 when skateboarders Rodney Smith, Eli Morgan Gessner, and Adam Schatz decided to team up and establish the dark, gritty, unbreakable and authentic street wear collection highly influenced by rapidly evolving scenes of hip-hop, skateboarding and graffiti artists. What started off as a plain line of skateboard decks and T-shirts steadily grew into a full blown collection of street wear discernible with military surplus and urban-athletic styling that was designed to hold up with NYC’s rugged terrain.
Almost two decades later, the brand continually works on redefining urban wear across the world, to reinforce the original Zoo York lifestyle and represent its New York City roots. Today, the company is not only recognized in United States but also across Europe. Recently, the company sold to Mark Ecko with Ashton Kutcher to become the new faces of Zoo York. Vice President Greg Lucci recognized actor and former fashion model, Ashton Kutcher as a dedicated individual that possesses an attitude that epitomizes the Zoo York culture.
Although Zoo York clothing started out as a line aimed toward the skateboarding culture, it has evolved into a non-discriminating brand offering a variety of shoes, backpacks denim, T-shirts and track jackets for people who want a bold, sleek, and visually striking image of today’s East coast style.
