Earlier this year, we reported that Sean “Diddy” Combs’ brand Sean John Clothing Company was slapped with a lawsuit by Empress Haircare Products. The lawsuit claimed that Sean John’s representatives had approached the hair care company to clear the trademark for Sean John’s Empress perfume.
When Diddy’s company finally went ahead and launched the fragrance, Empress Haircare Products claimed that the fragrance was targeting the same market as Empress Haircare Line. Sean John was sued for infringement on a federally registered trademark and unfair competition. The damages sought by Empress Haircare Line were up to three times the amount suffered and three times the profits earned by the Empress perfume line released by Sean John.
However, the court ruled in favor of Diddy’s company and dismissed the lawsuit. It’s unlikely the case will be reopened. This clears the way for Sean John to keep using the name Empress for its perfume line.
