If you are into extreme sports like such as skateboarding and BMX, then you must have your own pair of DC shoes! If you don’t have one yet, then you don’t know what you’re missing out on. This iconic brand has definitely elevated the look and feel of skater sneakers.
DC Shoes were founded by extreme sports enthusiasts Ken Block and Damon Way. This dynamic duo both had great backgrounds behind them. Ken Block, for instance, has been competing into several action sports, such as skateboarding, snowboarding, motocross and is most notable for rally racing.
Damon Way, too, was into extreme sports, by becoming a promising skateboarder in California at the age of 15. Damon tried so hard so he could have sponsorship offers. However, one tragic accident changed his life forever. One day while being stirred up into a fight, Damon burst an artery in his head which caused him partial paralysis, virtually ending his skateboarding career. But it was not an end for Damon. He may be partially paralyzed but he ventured into something else, designing.
Like Damon, Ken was heavily into designing. In 1989, at the age of 22, Ken started creating a line of screen-printed t-shirts which was later known as the Eightball brand. At Palomar Community College in San Marcos, California he developed his computer design skills and even met his future business partner Damon. Way helped in selling Ken’s Eightball clothes, even having his brother Danny, who was a pro skateboarder, to be the first endorser of the brand.
Later on, Ken’s brother loaned him $10,000 for Eightball’s expansion. This boost in funds gave them a chance to move out and rent a 750-square foot warehouse.
Eightball was a success as the shirts became extremely popular in skate shops. So, they turned to a friend’s father, Clay Blehm. Considering that he was a business savvy man, he became the perfect fit to advise the company tot expand. As the company grew, he became the company’s chief financial officer while Ken was the company’s president and CEO.
Because of Eightball’s huge success, they created Droors (drawers) brand of jeans in 1992. In January of 1993, Eightball and Droors moved into Carlsbad, California in a 3,300 square foot facility. By October, both of these businesses were incorporated into Circus Distribution, Inc. with a revenue of $1.5 million. However, the Eightball brand did not last long (at least in the United States) after someone claimed ownership of the name in 1993.
After Eightball brand’s closure, Dub Outerwear was born. Ken loved hip hop and he believed that hip hop reflected much about the snowboarding lifestyle. He used this inspiration to create Dub Outerwear, which was first outerwear snowboarding company that used hand gaiters on jackets.
The next year, in Vista, California, Damon launched into another venture, a footwear line called DC Shoes. Getting involved in extreme sports made Ken realized that skateboarders or athletes just like him, do need special shoes so they can compete. So, DC Shoes started out as a small company focused on athletic shoes for skateboarders. Both Ken and Damon started marketing these shoes and as time passed by, their business was growing in the field of action sports.
In October of 1994, they moved their business to a much larger 16,000 square foot facility. Just like old times, Ken and Damon still partnered with Blehm in January 1995. As of 1995, their revenues were about $7 million. In 1996, Circus Distribution, Inc. ended with 50 employees and $21 million of revenues.
DC Shoes company is not just about providing the most comfortable and athletic shoes that an athlete can wear. They’ve gone beyond the manufacturing shoes. In fact, they are one of the first skateboard shoe companies with the most number of professional endorsements. In 1996, DC’s skateboarding team had grown to eight pros. Then, motocross and surf teams were also formed as well.
In 1997, Droors and Dub were sold. But DC Shoes brand grew more and more in revenues and in market. So, in 1998, Circus Distribution was renamed DC Shoes, Inc.
By March of 2004, Quicksilver, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of board sport wear and equipment, acquired DC Shoes in a $87 Million USD transaction. To cut the story short, after twelve years of creating unique design innovations, DC shoes has become a $135 million (and still counting) entity.
Aside from producing footwear for extreme sports, particularly skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, motocross and BMX, DC Shoes, Inc. also sells shirts, pants, jeans, shorts, jackets, caps, backpacks, and other accessories.
