The streetwear line launched in Fall 2009 and have garnered quite an attention from streetwear fans and celebrities alike. SoJones.com talks to Patrick, the genius behind Shrimp Sauce, to find out what flavor is so special from their… style sauce.
Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
Hi I’m Patrick, aka PPat, the owner of Shrimp Sauce. Shrimp Sauce launched Fall 2009 in Savannah, GA. I have always been interested in the aesthetics of designing and creating a clothing line; this has always been a goal of mine. I wanted the audience to get more out of my clothing line than just buying a t-shirt or piece of clothing. I wanted them to feel the raw emotion the brand creates from all aspects of the design including cut, color, fabric, simplicity, and packaging. There are so many brands out right now, and the majority of them are cookie cutter clones of the next. I didn’t know much about starting a business but I knew I could make statement in what I created regardless of being successful or not. I created the theme for Shrimp Sauce on what I knew and that was the South and its ironies. I knew it had to be Dark but tasteful; it’s not a brand for everyone which is what I like about it. Everyone wants to be different and look different. Over the summer of 2009, I created Shrimp Sauce from the ground up and launched the first line in October 2009.
:: Shrimp Sauce’s Statement ::
We are a lifestyle clothing label located in the swamp of Savannah, Georgia. We create high quality products with a little hint of Southern Gothic. The label takes influence from the south, the swamp, and the ocean. Shrimp Sauce was built off death, desire, closure, idealism, and beauty, and has risen from the Swamp to stamp itself in today’s market as a Cultural Pilgrimage.
Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)
Shrimp Sauce Spring 2010 line is titled “The Witch’s Diary.” A lot of brands started to do this Hail Satan inverted cross thing, which is cool because much of my work uses religion as a theme. However I wanted to stay off the bandwagon and stay fresh. I have always been interested in the occult and Creole Voodoo and Hoodoo lifestyle. I decided this would be a perfect theme to produce my body of clothing for the Spring Line.
The line fits the whole vibe of Voodoo and witchcraft, relating to the Southern Beasts, Robert Johnson, Warlocks, Maritime, and Southern Gothic. The presentation is also new keeping the Net packaging but adding some new aesthetics to the shirts. Half of the shirts are created with hand cut and double stitched linen patches. The use of the cut and sew patches is influenced by Southern Metal and Swamp Metal.
Along with the products and photo look book, I wanted to create a video Look Book. The video look book appears at the beginning of the site. The video sets the stage for the new line and creates the mood for the photo look book and products of “The Witch’s Daiary”.
Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)
Friends of mine have worn Shrimp Sauce on tours; a few of these bands include Little Tybee, GDP, and CDC . Our shirts have landed in the hands of Big Boi, Ceelo, and the rest of the Dungeon family.
What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (a particular piece, a look or even another brand)
There are two things not as much as a surprise as how big it’s progressing. A lot of brands are doing more Nautical themed work; I am seeing tons of lighthouses and anchors lately on shirts. The other is how big the Anti-God thing has been “catching on”; it’s hard to find a line out that doesn’t put an inverted cross in one of their designs.
What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
It won’t be overthrown but this zombie kick people are on will probably never stop. Shit sells though, just not my cup of tea.
What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
I have two; one of which was stolen from me. The one that was stolen was one of the original Operation Ivy shirts for the album Sound System; it was a bad ass shirt. The other is a Diamond vs. Collabo N.Y Misfits shirt (green on black gold foil grill). I love irony.
