When you have the thing called passion, working full-time at some corporation will never stand in your way to successfully launching your clothing line. Meet Hieu and Mike, who started their streetwear line: Calico no. 9 and check what they did to get to where they are today. SoJones talked to Hieu from Calico no. 9.
Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
My name is Hieu & my partner is Mike. How did we get started, well my partner & I are actually best friends & we weren’t serious about it until just a few years ago. With a down economy and us working for corporations we felt like this was the right thing to do. When we first started working on calico no.9 we wanted to make sure we were doing it for all the right reasons. It was more about starting up something from the ground up & us having a passion & love for street wear. Calico no.9 is pretty much a mirror/reflection of who we are from how our logo looks to our t-shirts are designed to how we composed our look book. Crafting together Calico no.9 also gave us the creative freedom to express our own thought’s & beliefs into this brand. No matter what industry your in or what you do in life, everyday is a hustle & grind. So we’re just putting out ideas that we experience on t-shirts & hopefully cats can connect to our brand. Below I’ve attached a mission statement of our brand.

Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)
The theme of this season’s look book is to capture authentic moments in our models(homies) in the streets of Long Beach. As far as inspiration, we’re very inspired by editorial photography because it captures more real/honest moments than posed photography. Our photographer, Travis Mccoy(www.travismccoy.com) did a great job in capturing our vision. Our true inspiration comes from the love of Long Beach, its a special gem in southern california that not too many people know about.
Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)
We just started this brand at the beginning of this month so no product placement yet but hopefully soon.
What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (a particular piece, a look or even another brand)
I don’t know, to be honest.
What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
I can’t throw out my hatorade card, sorry guys.
What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
So far it’s been our C9 logo shirt, we’ve been getting allot of good response off of our logo & our brand.
TuPac or Biggie?
We gotta go with 2pac. He used music more as a canvas to story tell his life experiences & his music connected with us on many cylinders. We gotta love bigger too, skilled mc for sure.
