SoJones has been loving Wildchild Nation streetwear for a long time, but just got the chance to talk to Marc David of Wildchild Nation and Threader Style. What’s Wildchild Nation and Threader and how are they connected? Read on.
Introduce yourself and describe how Threader started?
In 2006, along with two business partners, we started Wildchild Nation to design women’s streetwear influenced by music, pop culture, and hip hop dance under the Wildchild brand name. As we built the business, we realized there was an opportunity to help other brands with the same issues we had faced getting started. So as a result, we created Threader (www.threaderstyle.com) to distribute for the brands we work with. Most of the brands are hip hop dance related, and considering how popular dance is these days, there’s a lot of interest in the site, and Threader is growing quickly.
Describe this season’s theme for your line, Wildchild. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)
For fall 2010, we looked back to 80’s style, graffiti and pop music. You can see it expressed in the line from the photos we’ve included. We’re not just a basic t-shirt company – we do cut and sew and have built our brand around offering hoodies, sweatpants, and cardigans in addition to jersey cotton t-shirts.
Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)?
The brands on Threader are all over the entertainment industry. In the last couple weeks, we’ve got Wildchild styled throughout the new dance movie, “Step Up 3D”; the Beat Freaks have one of their shirts in Justin Bieber’s “Somebody to Love” video, and we snagged a picture of Keri Hilson wearing Shoeture.
What has been a surprise fashion hit on Threader over the last year? Any brand highlights?
Threader is the exclusive site to pick up Poreotics merchandise, so we expected Poreotics shirts to sell well considering they won America’s Best Dance Crew season 5. The surprise has been just how well they’ve done on the site.
What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
Rompers. How did anyone ever think grown women looked good wearing them?
What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
When I was a kid, I was fortunate enough to see Michael Jackson’s “Bad” World Tour. I picked up the official tour jacket as a souvenir. Not many can say they’ve got one of those… if only I could still fit into a youth medium…
TuPac or Biggie?
Is there a question? We’re from New York.
