A few months ago, SoJones met LaVie Clothing Co. at MAGIC 2010, the melting pot of every new streetwear brands. The brand featured one of the most memorable fashion pieces at the tradeshow, and that is the inter-changeable sweater. Now SoJones.com has the chance to finally speak to LaVie’s head honchos: Fausto Montano (Founder / CEO), Abiel Ruiz (Co-Founder / Head Designer) & Chris Hostos (Director of Marketing). Sit tight and enjoy what they have to say about LaVie Clothing Co.
Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
LaVie Clothing Co. is a unique lifestyle brand with no gimmick, no pitch, and no expiration date. It is a brand that believes each person has an opportunity to self express through his or her own style. LaVie believes in living life to the fullest, all while dealing with the classic city daily grind and hustle. We at LaVie aim our designs to reflect a hardworking, young professional enjoying every aspect of life. From day-to-day work, to night life, to traveling, to dinners, you name it-our goal is to keep our consumer fly no matter the occasion. Our brand came about as a mere idea in 2004. With very little knowledge about the fashion industry, we all put our unique individualities and minds together and through our countless efforts, networking and hard work, we were we able to build our brand to what it is today. We’d like to consider LaVie, “A breath of fresh air” among this gimmick-saturated fashion market. And God willing, we’ll be here for decades to come!
Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)
As mentioned during the previous question, there is no gimmick with LaVie. We don’t quite base our collections off themes. Our collections consist of a range of pieces that cater to different people and lifestyles. If anything, it’s more like a collage of themes. We like to cater to everyone. One thing is for sure, we are dedicated to designing great garments for fashionable people.
Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)
LaVie definitely knows of a few. However, that would spoil the surprise, the blog post and of course the suspense for the next hit, wouldn’t it? I can say LaVie has been seen on NAS, Chris Brown, Joell Ortiz, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, and more… However.. Follow the brand on one of the famous networking sites or our own website at www.LaVieNY.com and click on the blog tab for the newest celebs in LaVie.
What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (A particular piece, a look or even another brand)
This past season Fall/Winter ’09 would have to be the biggest surprise. Our double-breasted shawl cardigans (attached in Olive) arrived late to the warehouse and ultimlately, to be late to stores. However, it was the first item sold out across the board in every size and every color. During designing we thought we had a hit, but we never imagined the success we’d have with that piece.
What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
We here at LaVie believe in fashion expression- although you and I may not think is fashionable or stylish- the next person just may think it is. On another note, we do believe that the ‘replicated’ items is at an all time high… and that should just STOP!
What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
Hands down we all believe it would have to be the ‘U Love My Style tee’ it’s the piece that really built us from the ground up. Stores, customers and family accepted the brand with that tee, aside from becoming a household name. Not to mention, was reproduced it a number of times, but none came close to the original leather heart LaVie tee’s.
TuPac or Biggie?
With that classic question asked over the past few years, one will never know… each of us over at the LaVie office has agreed they were both great in each of their own way and have both left timeless music among our hearts and of course ears.
LaVie Clothing Co. has a wide array of collections and they are available at www.LaVieNY.com for around $30 up to $80. Below are SoJones-approved LaVie pieces and you can actually win them!
