The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is in the final stretch of preparations for its week-long celebration. This year’s event will be held from July 9 to July 14 throughout Brooklyn, from Williamsburg to Fort Greene to DUMBO. This year marks the eighth annual celebration of “all things hip hop.”
Established by Brooklyn Bodega in 2005, this hip-hop cultural event aims to highlight the positive aspects of the culture and its legacy “as an agent of artistic progression, community building, and social change.” More than just a concert, BHF offers hip-hop enthusiasts a wide range of family-friendly activities, including academic symposiums, grassroots empowerment, award shows, block parties, and more.
Last year’s festival with “Q-Tip & Friends” as its headline act attracted more than 20,000 fans. The event was successful at pleasing the crowd by featuring a roster of impressive hip-hop performances from special guests, such as Q-Tip, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes, Random Axe, Monie Love, and others.
What’s in Store for 2012 BHF
The bar has been set high since Q-Tip surprised 2011 festival attendees by bringing out Kanye West and Busta Rhymes during his headline performance. Last May, the BHF President and Executive Director, Wes Jackson, confirmed that Rhymes will be headlining the 2012 BHF. He said:
“Just as Q-Tip was in 2011, Busta is the embodiment of what Brooklyn Bodega and The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is all about. Diversity, inspiration, longevity all fueled by an undeniable love for the music and culture. Who else has rocked with Hank Shocklee, Q-Tip, Dr. Dre, Dilla, MOP, Janet Jackson, Diddy, Swizz [Beatz], The Fugees, and Nas? People have been asking how we are going to top last year when Q-Tip brought out Kanye. I think we figured it out.”
Featuring a full range of events, the program lineup for the week is as follows:
July 9 –The Show & Prove Super Bowl: “Welcome to Brooklyn”
Establishing Brooklyn as the bearing of hip-hop culture, “Welcome to Brooklyn” kicks off the week-long festivities with performances by Young Guru, Freeway, Evitan, 1982 (Statik Selektah & Termanology), and Reks.
