Although often being compared to another white rapper, Eminem, Asher Roth proves to be an artist in his own right. Roth stated in an interview with Complex Magazine regarding his comparison to Eminem:
“Him and I are different artists. I think the music’s going to portray that as time goes on. The comparisons are just…it’s cool to be compared to Em, but he’s one of the number one selling artists of all time. I’d rather be compared to him than pretty much anybody else. I think content and everything we rap about is completely different. We’re different artists. We just happened to be under the same genre.”
Roth was discovered by Atlanta-based promoter and former VP of Marketing of So So Def, Scooter Braun, in 2006 through MySpace. Roth immediately gets the respect of hip hop royalties such as Jay-Z, Akon and Andre 3000 and was immediately courted by a number of labels, including SRC, Def Jam, Warner Bros. Records and Atlantic before settling with SRC. On June 2008, Roth put out his first professional release, the Don Cannon and DJ Drama-helmed The Greenhouse Effect via the internet and this puts him as the first white rapper to be featured on Drama and Cannon’s influential Gangsta Grillz series.
About possibilities to try out other ventures, Roth says he’s always open to possibilities.
“You always wanna explore your possibilities. This is still a capitalistic country. My chase is for freedom and you have to be financially free in this country to get that. Of course there’s gonna be some side entertainment here and there but I don’t like, need to put out a line of tuxedos or anything”
This year Roth is going to get some approval nods as well from the urban fashion community regarding his collaboration with the Brand For Champions, UNDRCRWN. The label first released the College Collection back in March 2009, in support of Asher Roth’s first single, “I Love College”, which featured Varsity Sport-influenced line.
On 20th April 2009 Asher Roth releases his debut Album, “Asleep In The Bread Aisle”, and releases a further collaborative series with UNDRCRWN, following the success of the first College Collection series. The second collection consists of 3 limited edition t-shirts, inspired by Asher’s hit single “I Love College” and the cult classic 70’s film “Animal House”. The 100% cotton t-shirta feature some college-related illustration and also an image of Asher Roth in UNDRCRWN’s signature caricature fashion.
