Russell Simmons Becomes a Stamp

Russell Simmons will become the first hip-hop artist in history to be turned into a stamp!

The Def Jam co-founder’s profile will be one of 20 other stamps dedicated to some of the most famous vegetarians of all time, according to This is stemmed from a new campaign by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) as an effort to eliminate animal abuse.

The collection, “Vegetarian Icons” U.S. Postal Service PhotoStamp™, “honors some of the world’s most dynamic people from throughout history who went vegetarian out of concern for animals, their health, or the environment,” writes PETA’s press release.

In 2008 Russell Simmons defended his vegan diet to CNN with: “The consumption of animals causes more harm to the environment than all the forms of transportation put together.

“When they said dominion over the animals, I don’t think they meant the abusive 10 billion farm animals every year, which is what we do here in America,” Simmons continued. “I feel better, I look better, so it’s a big change for me. You have more clarity and I think that all of us want to be more clear. I wanted to look younger and feel better and wanted to be a greater contributor to the good on the planet […] The more I learned about factory farming… the more I realized that I could not, in good conscience, be a contributor to such violence.”

Fellow famous vegans to be featured on a stamp along with Simmons, includes Leona Lewis – who was also named as PETA’s 2008 Sexiest Vegetarian – Paul McCartney, Woody Harrelson, Gandi, Cesar Chevez, Bob Barker (“The Price is Right”), Ellen DeGeneres, and many others.

Leona Lewis, upon being named the Sexiest Vegetarian, told Essence Magazine that she follows a strict vegetarian lifestyle. “I am a vegetarian so I don’t have clothes, shoes, or bags made from leather or suede or any animal products. I’m on a mission,” said Lewis.

Depending on the demand of each stamp, the limited edition collection will be on sale from December 2001 thru January 2012.
