Most American singers start their careers in the states and then make the leap to international waters. Newcomer JoBee decided to take an alternative route to fame and has begun his career while living overseas in Kuwait. Only time will tell if the potential superstar made the right move.

How did you end up in Kuwait?

Well I was ex military and I had a buddy of mine who came over and referred me, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to make some money for my music and I came over here.

Have you been recording new material since you’ve been over there?

Most definitely; it’s been great. The experience here has given me so many things to write about because it’s been very interesting. It’s a totally different culture that has really inspired my music quite a bit. I would say it has caused me to push a little harder and become a better writer and singer.

Have you been able to work with local artists or producers while in Kuwait?

Not so much here in Kuwait, but in France and Germany and the surrounding countries I’ve been able to work with international artists with collabos and producers.

What’s that experience been like for you?

It’s funny because most people say I’ve done it backwards entering the international scene before going local and stateside, but it’s actually been pretty exciting working with the international acts. I’ve been able to tap into some new stuff including this new genre in France that this producer Dream Maker introduced to me, which the song will definitely appear on my album. It’s an island feel type of song that I’m really excited about. Overall, it’s actually helped in open up my mind musically by working with international acts.

What’s the story behind your new mixtape you have coming out?

To me it’s like a rollercoaster of emotions and you’re really going to be able to hear a little bit of everything on this mixtape. It’s actually the deluxe edition to a previous mixtape that has already been put out and this is just the follow up to that because I wanted to be able to put on here stuff that fans weren’t able to listen to on the last one. I added just about every genre you could possibly think of. There’s some alternative, reggatone, reggae, hip hop, neo-soul. You’re really going to be able to hear everything.

What makes you different than any other artist out there?

You’re going to be able to tell that it’s always real. I write my won stuff and it definitely comes from a real place. They’re always real lyrics about real situations that I’ve been through. I try not to follow trends and I try to create my own unique stuff and just do me. I think that’s what sets me aside. Right now they have this whole pop dance craze and everybody is jumping on that, but for me I’ll just go against the grain and do stuff that’s not out there because I think that’s the best thing for artists just to bring about individuality.

What are your plans to attract fans in the United States?

Mainly the internet of course, but we have a publicist and street team working things for us and going station to station. For right now tentatively I’m here, but I have plans to be back in the states in a few months. The internet is mainly how we’re getting it to people right now though.

How would you describe the following you already have overseas?

It’s pretty big, mainly in Germany, France and the UK. It’s also starting to pick up here in the Middle East as well. It’s going good. They’re really good about supporting international acts over here.

Why do you think now is the time for you to come out?

I think it’s the perfect time for me to come out because of that exposure to different styles and different cultures. I think I can jump in there and bring something that will appeal to everyone.
