Accessories Spotlight: Subs + GIVEAWAY!

The saggy pants phenomenon in the urban fashion world has caused a stir big enough to even make politicians talk about it. Even an American Idol contestant, General Larry Platt, stole a five-minute fame with his original song: “Pants On The Ground”, protesting the saggy pants trend.  But Andrew D. Lewis didn’t just talk or sing about it, he made things happen. He wanted a tool to make the sag just right without having the wearer ‘lookin’ like a fool with his pants on the ground’. How does the world take Lewis’ non-conforming fashion invention? SoJones talked to the man whose product made the CNN news.

Hi Andrew, let’s just cut to the chase: you design Subs, the ‘saggy pants garter’. What is the story behind this?
I know my Subs has been compared to women’s garters. Garters actually never crossed my mind during the development process.
I was shooting for a contemporary, hip-hop/urban take on traditional men’s suspenders. But, instead of going over the shoulder on the outside of the user’s clothing, Subs are worn more as an undergarmant. The name, Subs, evolved from suspenders. I changed suspenders to subspenders (a play on sagging and the low position of the product when worn, compared to traditional suspenders), and then shortened it to Subs. The rest is history.

What’s your take on the ‘Stop The Sag’ movement? Do you think ‘kids today’ hang their pants too low?

Although I do not fully understand the aesthetic appeal of sagging, I vehemently support saggers’ rights to choose how they present themselves to the world in everyday life. As they say, “live and let live.” Having said that, not only have I gotten tremendous support from the sagging community, I have also gotten significant support from people who are adamantly opposed to sagging. This is because the product, by design, moderates or controls sagging.

What were the comments you got when you launched your product?
I designed this product for saggers, in very close collaboration with saggers…. hundreds of saggers. The overwhelming majority of saggers who I talked to gave me a thumbs up for both function and aesthetics. And, as I mentioned, I have also gotten a lot of thumbs up from people opposed to sagging… “that’s bangin’,” that’s poppin’,” that’s hot,” “those are amazing,” “I wish I had thought of that” “you are going to be a very rich man,” and, simply, “Thank you.” Nevertheless, sagging is an extremely controversial subject, so I have gotten my share of negative comments…. “that’s incredibly dumb, ” “they look ridiculous,” “people should just pull up there pants,” “you are destroying our community,” and “real men don’t sag.”

Which celebrity, in your opinion, needs the Subs the most? If you have an opportunity to do collaborations, which celeb’s name first come to mind?
I can’t say which celebrity needs Subs the most, but I would love to see them on Rihanna. That would be hot as hell. As far as male celebrity collaborations are concerned, Kanye West is the first name that comes to mind. And, as far as business collaborations (on this particular product), I would love to talk with Jay Z, P. Diddy and/or Russell Simmons… who wouldn’t? :).

Let’s talk fashion, now. Which labels do you think have the best pants?
I have to go with True Religion. Their prices are outrageous, but they make gorgeous jeans.

We just have to ask: TuPac or Biggie?

So what are you waiting for, SoJones readers?  Go over to and get your own Subs today.  At $29.95 a pop, we think owning two or three is enough investment to start the new year.
