Hip hop impresario and urban fashion mogul Jay-Z has been seen sporting cult kicks Nike Air Yeezys by Kanye West in both colorways (Zen Grey / Charcoal and Black / Black) which were recently released. Was this Jay-Z’s form of props for Ye? Or was it footwear design research?
It turns out that Jay-Z and his Rocawear team have been formulating a new sneaker named the Rocawear R+ Evolution, which according to many sneaker enthusiasts, is inspired by collectible sneaks already buzzing up the streetwear market. The yet to be released R+ footwear line has been compared to the skaters’ favorite Supra sneakers, the recently released Nike Air Yeezys and the classic built-up Nikes.
The Rocawear R+ sneakers ad that was leaked recently features a solid black leather high top and touches of red in the insoles and laces. So far, the online community has mixed feelings (most leaning towards the negative). Some sneakerheads feel it takes too much influence from Kanye West’s designs for Nike and for Louis Vuitton and other popular lines. Others feel it’s a solid alternative for those who like a more simplistic design.
The Rocawear R+ is set to launch in June 2009, going head to head with the Louis Vuitton kicks by Kanye.
Last year, Rocawear launched the Roc Climber Boots, which were positively received despite some consumer comments about how the camel-colored suede looked a tad too much like the classic Timberland boots.
Rocawear has been making expansion breakthroughs this year, such as launching the Roc Pop Shop mobile store in early April, and is in the process of marketing perfumes with Parlux who will produce signature fragrances for Kanye West and Rihanna under the partnership.
Meanwhile, what’s your verdict on the first look at the new Rocawear R+ Evolution line?
