Looking for ways to look fly? Then you got to Find Love Inside before you could.  SoJones talked to Diontae “Nino” Bell about his clothing line, Fli Pelican, which is short for “Find Love Inside”.  Also find out about how Fli Pelican mixed work and play in their “rugged wear”.

Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
This entire venture came from a single prayer. Previous to Fli Pelican, I worked with an artist management team as a producer and engineer. As it relates to my future, I just prayed for direction and was lead to starting my own clothing company. Basically I was trying to transition from music to clothing, while servicing the Fli in everyone.

A lot of people don’t know that Fli Pelican is actually an acronym for ‘Find Love Inside’. The Pelican symbolizes selflessness. I wanted to name the company something that held significant meaning and value for everyone. It is important to spread positive energy and be comfortable with yourself; so in essence the company name is a gentle reminder for our consumers to do just that.

My initial vision was to create affordable street wear for men. It eventually evolved into something we like to call ‘rugged wear’; a blend between street wear and business casual attire, using durable materials. Everything at Fli Pelican is done in-house because we want to ensure quality products with every order. Also, when people have specific design requirements, we are able to make mock-ups almost instantaneously.

Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)
Outside of our current “Fli-Guy meets Fli-Girl” branding experiment, this seasons theme is rogue military. Expect to see more detailed items, deep and rich colors, tailored jackets, and camouflage slacks. On our tee-shirt end, expect more catch phrases and celebrity inspired silhouettes. Hoody’s this season, will be more bold and iconic.

My team is my muse. We all work together, throwing out ideas. Running sh#t daily.

Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)
Fli Pelican has styled a variation of celebrities such as Teayana Taylor, Lil Chuckee, Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Aaron Reid, Nia Riley, Beimaejor, Travis Porter and Rosco Dash. Mostly leaders of the ‘new school’, although we’ve had a variation of interested seasoned celebrities.

Fli Pelican has also had several placements in magazines such Edge Mag, XXL, VIBE, Antenna Mag and a few others. We have been featured on various hip hop blogs like worldstarhiphop.com, thrillist.com, irokfashion.com and a few others. Lastly, we’ve had cable television placements on MTV and BET (music videos).

What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (a particular piece, a look or even another brand)
Right now the ‘Amber Rose’ tee shirt is the hottest selling item. We also have large demands for the ‘Paper Planes – Wiz Khalifa’ tee shirt. Customers usually gravitate toward designs that target what’s new in the media. We released a special edition “Monsta” hoody for Halloween, that had a huge positive response as well.

What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
Death to skinny jeans! I’m joking. Everyone has their own style, so who am I to say what needs to be thrown overboard. A lot of fashion today is a carbon copy of something that came before and was thrown overboard at some point in history. Also, something that may look trash on one person, may look like treasure on the next. For me, I’m not impressed with the skinny jeans on men. Leave those for the ladies.

What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
I love them all! I put a lot of time and dedication into each of my pieces, but if I had to absolutely pick one favorite, it would be our Varsity Jackets. Being from Michigan, I can appreciate a good jacket. Especially one that is Fli.

TuPac or Biggie?
C’mon man. Biggie all day. No explanation needed.
