Recording artists are not the only cash cow for clothing brands, especially streetwear companies. Lately, performing artists including dancers have been coming up with their own clothing lines. Earlier this year, dance troupe Jabbawockeez launched their own line of streetwear, and on April 28th, 2009, Wildchild Nation announced a new partnership with international entertainment and performing company, Dance2XS. Wildchild Nation is a premier lifestyle streetwear apparel company founded by Luam, Traci Copeland, and Marc David, based in New York, which focuses on producing men’s and women’s quality, trend-right designs influenced by the Soho, urban, streetwear, and vintage markets.
About the collaboration with Dance2XS, Luam, hip hop choreographer and co-founder of Wildchild Nation stated:
“Partnering with Dance2XS was a logical next step in the growth of our streetwear clothing company. We have expertise in reaching the streetwear dance clothing market and have created a strong software platform to help us manage fulfillment.”
Patrick Chen, choreographer/dancer, who founded Dance2XS agrees, “Wildchild Nation was the perfect fit for us. Our large international following has been asking us for ways to purchase our t-shirts, but we haven’t been able to effectively manage the distribution of our streetwear until now.” Since its initial project at the University of Illinois when an enthusiastic group of dancers performed a series of successful shows including Dance of Chicago, Dance2xs rapidly expanded throughout the USA, from Chicago to New York. In 2003 the troupe went international, forming Dance2XS companies in United Kingdom, Portugal, Brazil, Prague, Italy and Australia.
Talks about serious collaboration happened in Taiwan, while Chen was choreographing the World Tour for Asian pop star, Amei. Luam of Wildchild Nation began discussing the collaboration with Chen, who was a principal dancer on the tour. Luam remarked, “2XS clothing fits in perfectly with Wildchild Nation’s vision of presenting a streetwear company through the hip hop culture and dance perspective.”
Dance2XS’s collection of t-shirts for both men and women is currently available on Wildchild Nation’s website.
Design highlights of the streetwear by Wildchild Nation for Dance2XS feature a Run DMC-inspired set of t-shirt both in black and white version, a v-neck 2XS x fire.TREE collabo designed by Simhy, a graffiti artist all the way from Shang Hai who’s able to free-hand draw art pieces. In closer look, you will be able to find “2XS”, “Leo Symbol” and “Aaliyah Sign” in the Chinese character. The character itself is a Chinese word “Wu” which means “dance” in English.
Prior to their collaboration with Dance2XS, Wildchild Nation has resurrected streetwear and collaborated in launching a range of streetwear with MTV Choreographer, Laurie Ann Gibson. Gibson is most known from her work on MTV’s Making the Band series and her choreography for the Paparazzi music video for British songstress, Lady GaGa. The line was a Limited Edition Boom Kack Hoody!, a silver and black jacket with ‘Legendary’ & Laurie Ann’s own 4L logo on the hood and also features Laurie Ann Gibson’s single “Addictive” in a slick red across the back.
