Lots of memorable moments happened during the 64th Prime Time Emmy Awards telecast. However, there was one moment that’s a little disturbing to us here at SoJones. Host Jimmy Kimmel had probably rehearsed this a lot, but somehow you could feel the audience’s hesitation to laugh when it actually happened.
So the set up was Kimmel failed to win the Variety Series Award, which was won by Jon Stewart for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and he blamed his parents for it. He introduced his mother and father, Joanne and James, who happened to be seated in the audience next to 30 Rock’s Tracy Morgan, saying:
“Before we go any further, I’d like you to meet my father and mother who are here in the audience.”
Kimmel went on:
“I know this isn’t the case for everyone, but my parents were very supportive and always told me, ‘You can do anything you set your mind to.’ This year I set my mind to winning an Emmy, and guess what, Mom and Dad? I didn’t win an Emmy.”
He threw in the fact that he felt Mom and Dad have lied to him:
“You told me I could, and now I didn’t, and now I’m devastated because you lied to me. Just like when you told me it would be cool to bring a briefcase to the first day of junior high school.”
Morgan jumped into Kimmel’s lament, and verbally “abused” the Kimmels, saying: “I don’t trust these two, Jim,” and Kimmel responded with:
“I don’t either, they are sick! Security, can you please have my parents removed from the theater? Go ahead and taze them if you need to. Out of the theater and into the parking lot, they need to learn somehow.”
The Kimmels were escorted out of the theater as awkward and nervous laughs began filling the room. You know what? Let’s just see what happened one more time:
Do you think the joke worked, or do you still feel awkward and think Jimmy Kimmel failed to hit the punchline? Discuss!
