Inspiration is easy to find. From everyday life to people’s stories. From around the world, to what’s at home, you’ll just have to look closer to get that creative spark going. But if you’re not a good observer, does this mean you’ll always be uninspired? Says who? Meet Jon Feldman, who takes his inspiration out of his experiences of the freelance PR. And he talked to SoJones.com about his brand: SPKSMEN.
Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
My name is Jon Feldman, I’m the founder of SPKSMEN. I’ve always been into the music and hip-hop scene real heavy, just as a fan and doing freelance PR for some artists as well. Through those experiences and relationships I built, it segwayed into starting a brand. Since college I would mess around with Photoshop and always had a fascination for visual art and fashion since I was a young kid. In the summer of 2010 SPKSMEN officially formed and I launched the brand with our debut line this past month.
Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)
I wouldn’t say there is a specific theme to pinpoint for this Spring line, but there is certainly some cohesiveness throughout. You will see a lot of the designs were influenced by 80’s and 90’s themed artwork. I think during that period before the internet became so popular, art and creativity in general were just much more pure in that time era. So a lot of that is represented in the line.
Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)
Right now I am keeping it within the circle of friends and artists who I’ve known for a while and also building relationships with new up and coming artists who I believe in. Some of them are: Apollo The Great, J. Ferb, T.A.S.K. Productions, E Major, DJ Black Diamond, and MoShadee to name a few. You will be hearing about some of these guys in the national spotlight before long, you can quote me on that.
What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (a particular piece, a look or even another brand)
I would have to say Converse shoes and snap back hats. A lot of styles in fashion have a cycle whether it be 10 years or 20 years, but right now those are definitely popular again. Wiz Khalifa has been an unofficial brand ambassador for Chuck Taylor’s with his crew alias “Taylor Gang.” I think influential young artists like him definitely help spread the word about new fashion tips. He needs an endorsement deal with them already!
What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
Skinny jeans. Can’t understand it. I realize the baggy look is not in style anymore, but tight jeans are just not for me. 501’s all day, can’t go wrong with those.
What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
Exclusive dunks and sb dunks. My collection is not as big as most serious collectors, but I have some gems. On very special occasions I’ll pull out the Pharrell dunks.
TuPac or Biggie?
BIG, no question. I like Pac and listened to both of them growing up, but Biggie has that impeccable flow and charisma that’s just unmatched. “Everyday Struggle” is one of my favorite songs of all time. That song has helped me get through a lot till this day.
