You know that your creation hit the spot with your customers when you don’t need to say much for them to pick your stuff up and actually wear them with pride. Thomas Krown should know the great feeling as his Nerdy Fresh brand got favorited by celebs as organically as he created it. Find out more as SoJones.com talked to the Nerdy Fresh founder.

Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
My name is Thomas Krown, I was born in Cameroon Central Africa and grew up in Paris. I always been fascinated by art, fashion and music. Starting a clothing line has always been a dream and when I moved to the US in 2003 after I graduated high school I started to plan how I would make my dream a reality.

I started the clothing brand with a simple hat with Nerdy Fresh stitched in white on the front and seeing my brand on an actual product gave me the strength to work harder and better at my craft.

The name Nerdy Fresh comes from who I was as a kid and still am to this day. Growing up I could always relate to nerds because they were always doing what they love to do even if it’s corny to others. The cool kids were a bunch of followers to me who rely too much on their friends to know what’s cool. I like to collect vinyl toys, read mangas and very goofy at times, so I guess that’s what makes me a nerd. I think it’s cool to make stuff from scratch or have fun working on science projects, if that’s what makes you truly happy I think its the coolest thing to do.

I have a great sense of style, odd coordination and dressing etiquette, thanks to a very classy lady I have the honor to call mom and a shoe fanatic dad.

When you put those 2 sides of my personality, you have Nerdy Fresh. A brand that represents the idea on wearing clothes that you like and can translate to whatever your personality is. I am trying to make clothes that are fun but with a classic twist to it. The type of clothes everybody could relate to, but the ones that wouldn’t overshadow your own style.

My logo represents the desire to go as far as you can go in life (the astronaut), but doing it with the up-most style (the bowtie)

I new add a talent for designing but didn’t know much about the work that comes behind every successful brands. My first year I didn’t have any strategy at all, it was a lot of try, miss and hope. You make it types of moves, but it allowed me to learn a lot and grow from my mistakes. I am still making mistakes to this day but I have a defined goal and everyday I am getting closer to it. I always want to introduce more product to the brand and take risk, I believe getting into unknown area will bring the best out of the Nerdy Fresh brand, so definitely be on the look out.

Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)

This season, I stayed true to my motto: “simple, classy and fun”

I don’t usually have a specific theme because I feel like it limits my creativity process. I design clothes organically, therefore I just put out what I know is dope at times. I think with times like any other designer before me, you will see different pieces with similar a theme here and there, but for the most part I will just have fun with it and stay creative.

Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc)
Making great clothes gave me the chance to meet great people, some famous some not. It’s always flattering to see a celeb wearing my work, but truthfully I am not into forced product placement. My team and I always present the brand with the same enthusiasm to anybody. People such as Kenny Burns who I have the utmost respect for genuinely love the brand, Steph Jones great singer and talented artist, DJ Smallz one of the greatest DJ in the south, legendary rapper Bun B copped the Fresh Teddy Bear crew without me saying anything.

Big Sean

Kendrick Lamar, who is the most anticipated artist from LA got the Mondoe sweater at a meet and greet in Dallas and nobody from my team was there to show him the piece, he just picked it naturally. The runners who are the hottest producers in the south right now (produced welcome to my hood by DJ khaled) contacted me after a good friend showed them my website. I am always surprise to see my clothes on some red carpet and videos. So who knows… maybe the Grammys someday, who knows!!!

What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (a particular piece, a look or even another brand)
That’s a good question, I am really into classic fashion, but I would say, you can see more urban art into “high fashion” such as high top sneakers made by every exclusive and expensive brands; Swizz Beats working with Aston Martin and Piguet, I consider that as a fashion statement, it’s major move, I think people have been sleeping on it (James bond car WOW).

Plus people are no longer afraid to wear fitted/skinny jeans, fashion is about being comfortable and happy with what you wear, not what people think you are.

Overall fashion is always moving in cycle and I am always looking for unconventional designers or clothing to come and change the g, I think that’s the type of task fitted for Nerdy Fresh.

What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
Nerdy Fresh everywhere, would love to make an outfit for the pope

I just want to see people wear clothes they like, not clothes other say are dope. It s about behind creative and different not blending in. So more individuality would be better.

What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?

Red dungarees shorts (mom throw them away when I was 4 because that’s all I wanted to wear… everyday)

TuPac or Biggie?
Tupac, I think his persona outside rap was as much interesting as his rap career.
