Christina Aguilera is not a stranger to the Super Bowl stage, especially in singing the national anthem. However, last night was not her finest performance at the Super Bowl XLV kickoff, causing hard criticisms from Twitter users. Check the video below to again relive the moment where she flubbed the words to “The Star-Spangled Banner”.
Instead of singing the song’s fourth line: “O’er the ramparts we watch were so gallantly streaming?”, she merged the lyric with the song’s second line: “What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?” and delivered: “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming?”
Aguilera quickly released a statement, defending her performance, to the Associated Press:
“I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”
Any thoughts on this, SoJones readers?
