The year 2010 went by so fast! Earlier this year, SoJones featured some up and coming brands and one of the most memorable ones is Dealers of The Purple Cloth. We’re totally taken by surprise as this brand has come a LONG way in just mere months. SoJones.com talks to Lydia Nam, the brain behind the name to find out the freshest news from her brand.
Hello Dealers of The Purple Cloth, been quite some time since the last time we talk in January. So, how’s 2010 for your brand? Any highlights?
Hey SoJones! What’s good? It’s been almost a year since we last spoke, and so much has happened with the brand! First things first, we dropped “Dealers of the” part of “Dealers of the Purple Cloth” to just “Purple Cloth” – short, concise and to the point. I believe evolution is key to sustaining any sort of longevity in any game and a name revamp was necessary to keep our brand fresh. (Ask Diddy!) We just dropped our Holiday 2010 collection, called Mini- Minnie. It’s a small 9 graphic tees collection that was inspired by Minnie Mouse and the rest of the Disney gang. A lot of us are 80’s or 90’s babies, and we all grew up in the Disney era, and it’s something I believe we can all relate to – of course we put our own Purple Cloth witty spins on the theme such as: over sized golden dollar sign with giant Minnie Mouse hands holding it, or our signature Panda dressed as Minnie Mouse with the phrase, “I don’t get mad I get money”. This line dropped last month into stores, which is doing extremely well for us. We just did a fashion show for it as well which was again a huge success. We also switched up our website to a blog driven site, which is updated daily with news about our brand, and our day to day life within the company and basically anything that influences us & drives the brand.
What’s your best-selling item to date?
Our best selling item currently right now is the “I heart money” tee as I mentioned above, with a giant dollar sign with Minnie Mouse hands holding it.
What will we see in 2011? Any teasers on what’s coming our way?
We are very excited about our upcoming Spring delivery which we are starting production for very soon, your gonna be seeing tanks, tees & dresses – all graphic driven. I don’t want to give too much away, but I can say that it’s going to be the 3 F’s: fly, flirty, and fun! Think sweets, cupcakes & desserts mixed in with poking fun at female body parts!
Purple Cloth has some of the boldest designs. Which celebrity do you think has the matching attitude to rock your stuff?
Nicki Minaj & Korean pop group, 2NE1 are our 2 faves right now as far as a true icon of what a Purple Cloth’s girl is. They got the look, the sound, and that bad-bitch, yet that real-life doll like feature we absolutely adore. We love girls that look like we dreamt them into real life! Who wouldn’t? Being regular and ordinary is boring. And regular and ordinary is the exact opposite of what we are representing. How much more fun is it to be colorful & flavorful over the bland masses? We also had the pleasure of meeting Amber Rose this past year, (who’s probably most famous to dating Kanye West) she’s a video vixen turned socialite, and a real life barbie! Her swag has been something we’ve always felt was so dope – she has such a strong sense of individuality and she knows what really works for her and her body type. She was also very sweet in person and loved all the pieces we gifted her! (We also blogged about this as well, you can check out photos of her @ www.purplecloth.com) We basically love any girls that have their own sense of look and style and really own it. I think we live in a generation of followers rather than leaders who don’t take risks not only in fashion but with themselves. They are too shy or timid to be comfortable in their own skin – that’s not girl power at all!
If you were to collaborate with a celebrity who’s also a designer, whose name comes first into your mind and why?
The first person that comes to mind is Gwen Stefani – I think she’s one of the few celebrity designers that designs for her personal taste – she’s always seen photographed in her own clothing. I see celebrity owned brands and when they are out, and they aren’t rocking their own stuff – that doesn’t seem authentic to me. I also really love Gwen’s unique look, it’s very punk/rock meets vintage hollywood – I mean who else would play Jean Harlow other then her in a movie? She’s not doing much in music anymore as far as I know now, but she’s a full time mother to 2 beautiful children and a wife. These are some things I want in the near future as well, so I just really respect her overall.
For this holiday season: which items do you recommend for SoJones readers?
For this Holiday I really recommend our “I heart money” tee – it comes in 3 colorways of black white and our signature purple! It’s great to wear with jammie bottoms & fuzzy slippers if you are opening gifts with the fam over the holidays or you can swag it out with jeans & a dope blazer. (We love versatility!)
Purple Cloth clothing is available for purchase at PurpleCloth.com. And this holiday, they’re giving away one of their most sought-after designs. Read on!
