SoJones.com met Dolo Clothing Co. and immediately think it’s the next big thing. If you like boldness, this streetwear line is for you. Desmond Bellot talked to SoJones.com about his label, Dolo Clothing Co.

Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
Dolo Clothing Co. was created in 2002 by Desmond Bellot (Owner/Ceo) as a means to a void. During the early 1990′s brands like Ralph Lauren and Nautica were a huge trend in the urban society but they
weren’t urban, didn’t reflect what the culture stood for nor did they mirror the movement within the community.
Shortly after, brands like Maurice Malone, Fubu, Karl Kani and later Mecca USA came to the forefront …These brands
brought relevance and most importantly the people felt as though it was “one of their own”. Originally growing up in
the inner city to schools I attended mirrored the type of clothing I would relate to.

But things changed once I moved into areas that were more mixed and diverse. My attitude, experiences and
outlook on life began to change. I became more open to the outlook on society and to a way of life regardless of
one ethnicity. Communities became a “melting pots of cultures” across the country and the people began to
become “conscience” about life, their outlook and their belief in themselves.

Even with the movement of change brands still didn’t “stand for something” yet the new society of believers did. So
as a conscience movement grew, “Rolling Dolo” became the slogan. Originated from the word “solo”, Dolo became
the signature for being the strength to be an individual, a rebel for a cause…to go against the grain….and to be self
empowered and understand that anything in life is possible. But it begins with the belief in you.

Describe this season’s theme for your line. Include any sources of inspiration (examples: 80’s punk, muses like Amber Rose, 70’s disco bands, Kanye, etc)
Dolo Clothing Co. Fall/Holiday/Winter collection of 2010 represents being “Consciously Dope” ……the vibe reminisces to an 80’s feel with a movement of being conscience and the courage of self/individuality. An era when artist like, “Krs-One, Public Enemy, & NWA”, used their lyrics as a voice to express their beliefs and had the courage to “stand for something”. Graffiti was as art of self expression. A period when gangs and violence across America was so violent, artist united to create anti-violence classics like “Self-Destruction (Krs-one)” & “We are all in the same gang (E Z E)”.

In Respect, we created a unique/controversial piece with the addition of lyrics forming an imagery of a gun–“Stop the Violence”. As a tribute to groups like EPMD- we created “Relax your mind, and let your conscience be free” a powerful statement to ease yourself when life seems chaotic and out of control. “Run Dolo” long sleeve is a classic that has become a staple piece in our collection. Specifically influenced by the kings of hip hop, their ability to take a chance & the confidence to believe in themselves…. as they solidified their place in history as leaders/trendsetters. Highlighted is also our favorite, a simple, clean yet bold piece, “Dolo” with a soft foil touch. The 80’s stood for principles, standards & ethics. In Dolo Clothing Co we stand to be Confident, Driven & Aggressive.

Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for (examples: publicity photos, magazines, movies, music videos etc).
Keep an out for Juelz Santana rocking the brand in wvsoul magazine, product placement in the Source & wvsoul, Videos by Ameer (NYC), Millie Holiday (NJ), Lace Official (Los Angeles).

What has been a surprise fashion hit over the last year? (a particular piece, a look or even another brand)
Our “Run Dolo” pieces! All walks of life appreciate the individuality in the slogan.

What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
The insertion of skinny jeans…no one needs to see your ass or your underwear.

What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
We created a unique/controversial piece with the addition of 80’s lyrics forming an imagery of a gun—titled “Stop the Violence”—Ironic for the chaotic world we live in but perfect for our brand due to our consciousness.

TuPac or Biggie?
TuPac. I personally have more relevance, connection to his walk in life, what he stood for, his individual strength, courage and belief in himself. If he was still here we would probably be business partners.
