Television might be dominating our lives, video might have killed the radio star and don’t get us started on computers. Days of just being content with a book seems light years away now, and to actually ‘read’ a book is already considered a ‘classic’ pastime for some people. Enter the new wave of fashion-literate readers, bringing in the new cool in literature classics through fashion: Out Of Print Clothing.

With their 100% cotton -some 65% cotton and 35% polyester, distressed soft material and fitted cut, Out of Print Clothing celebrates the world’s greatest stories through fashion. Todd Lawton elaborates to SoJones, on the importance of books… and swagger.

Introduce yourself and describe how your brand was started?
The long story is Out of Print was started in 1984 when both founders met in a suburb of Portland, OR. The shorter story is Out of Print was created as a way to allow people to be stylishly bookish. We channel the worlds of art, literature, and fashion into a line of t-shirts that celebrate some of the world’s greatest stories.

What literature work inspires you the most?
That’s a really tough question because there are so many books that have inspired and influenced us. One favorite book both of owners share is “Catch 22.”

Out of Print Clothing is a clothing line with a mission. Can you tell SoJones readers about it?
We want people to talk about and share their love of great stories with others. Not only are our shirts great conversation starters about the works that influence the world, but each shirt purchased makes possible the donation of one book to a community in need through our partner Books For Africa.

Any product placements on celebs to keep an eye out for? Or writers’ endorsements maybe?
There’s nothing we can mention at the moment, but we’ll definitely Tweet about it when it happens.

What current fashion trend would you like to see thrown overboard?
Badmouthing fashion trends is bad karma. We are a karma-neutral company.

What is/was one of your most prized fashion pieces, past or present?
A leather jacket reminiscent of Arthur Fonzarelli from the “Happy Days” (a thrift store find) and wool cap so fine words will not do it justice.

What can SoJones readers expect from Out of Print in the future?
Although there’s no defined cadence of product releases, we’ll keep things fresh and fun. We have a lot in the hopper, our women’s line will be released soon, following that will be some special collections, and limited edition one-offs. If you like what we are doing sign up for our newsletter, follow us on Twitter, be our Facebook friend and you’ll be the first to hear about it.
