Since 1999, American clothing brand Akademiks has been the innovator, creator and the driving force behind what’s hot and relevant in urban fashion. Their motto “DENIM IS KING” has been at the forefront of every one of Akademiks’ collections and has become popular among denim enthusiast who craves quality and detail. Vintage washed, hand-dressed, hand-brushed, over-dyed tinted, potassium-sponged and tripled-dipped indigo treatments are a few of the innovative design techniques that bring credibility to the title “Jeanius Level” products.
Donwan Harrell, the genius behind Akademiks, began designing for high-profile fashion brands such as Joseph Abboud, Donna Karan and Nike. Working alongside his wife Jahayra and brother Emmett, Donwan expanded Akademiks from a men’s apparel line into a well-rounded brand that includes women, children, accessories, footwear and outerwear divisions.
In 2001, the brand became popularized when Brooklyn rapper Fabolous included Akademiks into one of his songs in his debut album “Ghetto Fabolous“. Shortly after Akademiks gained popularity in the clothing industry as a number of celebrities such as Dizzee Rascal and 50 Cent began to wear Akademiks and its luxury denim brand PRPS jeans.
Although Akademiks gained massive popularity over the years, it also brought about a number of scandals. In 2004, the label achieved a degree of notoriety when its advertisements on New York MTA buses, were banned due to its explicit content. However since then, the brand has continued to move on in committing itself to provide the latest urban fashions.
Each season, Akademiks remains committed to creating and designing fashion for thinkers and doers of tomorrow. Akademiks started out as a vision that sought to empower the customer through intelligent design, and because of this they are now highly credited as the source for creative street wear. Since the beginning, Akademiks and its brand extensions have offered original, stand-alone products that is ahead of its time yet right on target.
