Alibi Clothing Hip Hop Fashion Interview

Well, before the holidays, there was a few parties for up and coming hiphop fashion designers in Midtown, New York and Urb1 got the invites. The one that we were most impressed by however was none other than Alibi Clothing. Seen in XXL, we had our doubts, but after seeing their products we can give them nothing but love. Read the interview to get some details from the owner’s mouth directly!

(SoJones) WHAT DOES THE NAME ALIBI MEAN AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE IT?
(Alibi Clothing)
I picked the name Alibi because living In America you always have to have one, there for you should always have one of my garments,Its one of our slogans.

(SoJones) HOW LONG HAS ALIBI BEEN IN THE BUSINESS? WHO OWNS ALIBI? WHO ARE THE FOLKS IN THE ALIBI FAMILY? HOW DID YOU MEET?
(Alibi Clothing)
Alibi Has Been in Business for 4 1/2 Months to the Public, but Our Research and Development Has Been at Work for a Year 1/2 Prior.alibi Was Started by Charles M. Bryant. Since Then it Has Grown to about 15 with My Right Hand Man Jerome (Jerry) Jackson as Sr. Sales Rep..

(SoJones) A LOT THINK YOUR SHOES ARE CUSTOM PAINTED KICKS, BUT THEY ARE NOT. WHAT SEPARATES YOU FROM THE PAINTED SHOES AND SHOES OF THAT TYPE?
(Alibi Clothing)
Our Boots Are Not Air Brushed. They Are Hand Painted with Raised Lettering. Topped off with a Clear Protective Coat.

Also from Talking to Charles from Alibi, We Learned That the Method They Used Is Not Done by Anyone Else. It Took Him Years to Develop The Media He Uses on Shoes and No One Has Mimiced it Yet. The Raised Lettering Will Not Come Off and Has Been Tested by multiple rough-wear tests.

(SoJones) ARE YOU WORKING WITH ANY ARTIST, CELEBS, OR THAT KINDA THING? HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT GETTING THEM INTERESTED IN WEARING YOUR DESIGNS?
(Alibi Clothing)
We are slated to design clothing for two new rap acts, Hindu and John Doe. They will be wearing Alibi clothing in their upcoming videos, to be shot sometime around All-Star Weekend. The group Hindu is signed to Eric Sermon’s label and John Doe is signed to Robin Hannibals label. I meet both Robin and Eric at dIfferent times in NYC just by chance. I had my gear with me, I showed them and they both loved It. The rest Is history.

(SoJones) WHAT MADE YOU GET IN THE HIPHOP FASHION GAME? WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO FOR THE GAME? WHY SHOULD PEOPLE EMBRACE WHAT ALIBI IS SELLING?
(Alibi Clothing)
I am in the game because the public is now ready for me,a couple of years back my stuff would be looked at as off the wall. But now with the stuff thats out there we fit right in.peole will embrace us because we are fresh and new and that will inturn help the game itself. I want to push cats to be more creative that will help the game grow.

(SoJones) WHAT PROBLEMS DO YOU SEE IN THE HIPHOP FASHION GAME AND THOSE CONSIDERING THEMSELVES “URBAN”?
(Alibi Clothing)
The problems I see in the urban fashion game the most is kinda like the rap game today, everyone is doing the same thing. Why do you think the old school styles are comIng back and staying? No one is creating anything new. It’s all about what will sell. Come on trucker hats, get real, we’re coming out with a trucker hat, but it can’t be like the rest. I myself never liked them and I still dont, but I know it can be another sale because no one is doing anything new.

(SoJones) WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THE OTHER YOUNG CATS TRYING TO GET IN THE HIPHOP FASHION GAME? WHAT THINGS HAD YOU WISHED SOMEONE WOULD HAVE WARNED OR TOLD YOU ABOUT BEFORE YOU STARTED ALIBI CLOTHING?
(Alibi Clothing)
My advice to anyone getting into this game would be first to know what you truly want to do! Then do it in steps… Don’t try to do it all at one time if u have a low budget. Work within those means and be ready for a bumpy ride and believe in your product. Don’t worry about the nay sayers, cause when your shit hits they will be on it. This fashion game is no joke and it takes a lot of cake to stay afloat. If you got something hot they will be coming at you, the sharks that is. Know the busIness, have your legal team together and pray every nIght for somethIng good to happen.

(SoJones) WHAT OTHER PROJECTS ARE YOU WORKING ON? ARE YOU GONNA STICK TO THE FORMULA YOU ARE USING NOW OR DO YOU PLAN TO BRANCH OUT IN OTHER AREAS OF FASHION LIKE JEANS, ETC.
(Alibi Clothing)
The biggest misconception folks have about Alibi is that our work Is air brushed. You really have to see the work first hand to know that it’s not air brushed, ask rod. Its all hand painted, hand crafted, one of a kind work of art.

(SoJones) ALSO WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION FOLKS HAVE ABOUT ALIBI?

(SoJones) YOU GOTTA REP WHERE YOU FROM! TELL THESE PEOPLE HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN A PART OF HIPHOP CULTURE AND WHERE YOU RAISED? A LOT ARE OUT HERE FRONTING LIKE THEY CARE ABOUT HIPHOP BUT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT AND WE PLAN ON EXPOSING THOSE FRONTERS. BUT ANYHOW, GO AHEAD AS I KNOW YOUR ALIBI!
(Alibi Clothing)
I am from Roosevelt Long Island. Ive been a part of hip hop sInce the late 70s. I was raised In Roosevelt, rIght around the corner from my very close frIend CHUCK D OF PUBLIC ENEMY. I spent my summers and weekends working in my Uncle’s cleaners at River Park Rowers in the “boogie down” Bronx. It was there I made new friends that were showing me hip hop. I mean real hIp hop! You want to talk old school I could take you back. You would have to be 38 and better to know what I am talkIng about. Anyway, it was there where I became part of this hip hop culture that runs deep in my blood, from seeIng grand wIzard therdor at p.s. 82 to flash at the disco fever, the Blue Room, the CeleberIty Club in Harlem, Bonds International, the Roxy, and the Rock Steady Crew doing there thing, ban2 otb tags on every line, King Charles Clark Kent, the Disco Twins, black jack, and AJ the Skate Key. I could go on and on for days! Hip hop Is love man and I belong to its first generation. peace and thanx!
